ALGEMEEN
De verwekkers uit het genus Rickettsia kunnen een verscheidenheid aan ziektebeelden geven. Onderscheid wordt gemaakt in: de ‘spotted fever’-groep, omvattend meer dan twintig species, waaronder R. rickettsii, R. conorii en R. africae; en de tyfusgroep R. prowazekii, verwekker van epidemische vlektyfus, en R. typhi, verwekker van endemische vlektyfus.
